We are Saga Goryu North America. We practice Japanese flower arranging in the Saga Goryu tradition. Based in Portland, OR, our branch has members in Washington, DC, and Sacramento, CA.
Preserve. Share. Inspire. The mission of Saga Goryu North America is to preserve and share our ancient Japanese art form. Guided by the belief that in beauty we find purpose, we foster creativity, mindfulness, and a deep connection to nature. Through education, practice, and community engagement, we inspire individuals to integrate the harmony and balance of ikebana into modern life, enriching personal and collective spaces across North America, and promoting the value of cross-cultural exchange.
Ancient. Alive. Relevant. Connecting to Daikakuji, our root temple in Kyoto, is fundamental to our practice. We also seek build to community where we live. While ikebana is historically associated with privilege, we teach, practice, and share our work in diverse settings, including with adults in custody at Oregon State Penitentiary.
Learn. Teach. Share. Through classes, demonstrations, and exhibitions, our chapter has been active for 85 years. We are the oldest branch of Saga Goryu Ikebana outside of Japan.
